  Consultancy & Research

Specialist advice in timber sourcing and specification has been provided to a number of projects including to Gaia Architects Glencoe Visitor Centre, one of the largest projects to use home-grown timber in Scotland to date. Between 2000 and 2001, we worked with Gaia Architects on the EU NPP funded Roundpole Group. As part of this project we built and tested a composite timber and concrete panel—an early example in Scotland of ‘massive timber construction’.

The theme of ‘massive timber’ was taken up by North Woods — again working with Gaia Architects — in 2004 in the EU NPP funded ‘Econo’ Project which has investigated the potential of ‘Brettstapel’ and other ‘massive timber’ systems for Scottish construction. The results of this work will be published in due course at www.econo.fi As a result of this project, we are pursuing the possibility with a number of clients of using imported massive timber panels in house construction projects which are currently at an early design stage. Having worked with the Austrian architect Walter Unterrainer, North Woods is one of the very few Scottish designers with the necessary experience to help pioneer these systems in Scotland.

We expect to play a leading role in a ‘Scottish Massive Timber Group’
which we are helping to inaugurate currently.Working under Gaia Architects, we were appointed (October 2006) Specialist Consultants to Borders Region in their 3 year research and development contract to increase use and understanding of home-grown timber in construction and fabrication throughout the region. Amongst other tasks, the project will devise new advisory literature and fora for dissemination of this knowledge as well as help to develop new products and markets with local businesses.
